How do I safely open the inner lid of a reagent bottle in the lab?

2025-03-13

As we all know, reagent bottles are an indispensable tool in chemical experiments. However, accidents are often prone to occur on the way to open the reagent bottle. For this reason, Haixiang, a reagent bottle manufacturer, feels that it is still necessary to open the bottle carefully.
In order to ensure the quality of the bottled reagents and the tightness of the packaging, the bottled reagents used in the laboratory usually have a built-in plastic inner cap. The inner lid is recessed in the middle and deeply embedded in the glass bottle. Due to the lack of a focal point, it is difficult to open with bare hands, especially when dangerous reagents need to be handled gently.
In this case, it is not advisable to operate brutally, such as the following are common wrong actions:
Open it with your bare hands, which can cause physical damage to your nails. Or the gloves may be damaged during the opening process, and the fingers may be contaminated with corrosive properties (e.g., concentrated sulfuric acid, hydrogen peroxide, etc.), causing continuous chemical damage.
Use scissors or other sharp objects to open from the edges, which can cause damage to the mouth or inner cap of the glass bottle, and reduce the seal. And once the operation is not careful, or the force is too large, the sharp weapon will slip from the edge and hurt the other hand.
Open from the middle with scissors and other sharp objects, the inner lid is thin in texture, which is very easy to be punctured and cause damage to the glass bottle mouth or inner cap, and the sealing will be reduced, which will affect the next use. At the same time, foreign matter such as rust can be contaminated. The tool itself is also susceptible to contamination and corrosion.
The correct way to do this is to use the outer cap of the reagent bottle to open the inner cap:
Slowly wedge in with the edge of the outer lid and lift the inner lid. The action should be gentle, and gently deflate while opening to release the pressure in the bottle and avoid liquid splashing. At the same time, do not directly remove the cap and roll it down to the table or the floor. When about 1/2 of the inner lid is exposed to the mouth of the bottle, you can gently remove it with your hands (remember to wear gloves) and place it properly.
In this way, it is convenient and does not hurt your hands and avoid contamination, while ensuring the integrity of the packaging.
